A proper history day out with gardens, but the café and access routes are a bit of a faff.

What’s it actually like?
Down House is Charles Darwin’s former home, now run by English Heritage, and the reviews paint it as a solid all-round history visit rather than a flashy kids’ attraction. You get recreated downstairs rooms, upstairs displays about Darwin’s work and voyages, and plenty of information about the family life behind the famous theory. There’s also a dressing-up area and seasonal events, which helps lift it beyond a standard old-house wander. The big win for families is the grounds. Reviewers mention extensive gardens, the Sandwalk, kitchen gardens, greenhouses, meadow and woodland, plus enough space for children to run off steam. The interpretive displays are said to be easy to follow, and there’s enough variety to keep school-age children interested without parents having to do all the talking. Parking is available, toilets are clean, and there’s a café, shop and picnic area. The niggles are fairly typical English Heritage ones: the café is a bit small and on the pricey side, photography is restricted inside the house, and access involves some single-track roads. A few areas can be closed, parking can be tight at busy times, and the site is much better in good weather. It’s a worthwhile visit, but not exactly a spontaneous “let’s just pop in” sort of place.
