A proper hidden gem for architecture fans, but not a casual pop-in and there’s no cafe to save you.
The long read worth saving for nap time
What’s it actually like?
The Homewood is a National Trust Modernist house in Esher, set in around 8 acres of gardens on the edge of Esher Common. Visits are by guided tour, and several reviewers mention the house is only open on Fridays for part of the year, with bookings opening on Thursdays and places going fast. What people love is the combination of the house and garden: striking interiors, knowledgeable guides, and a garden that feels more like landscape than formal planting, with stream, shrubs, trees and big views. There’s parking on site, the welcome is generally warm, and the whole thing sounds genuinely special if you like architecture, design or a bit of hidden-history smugness. The downsides are practical rather than dramatic. There’s no cafe or toilets on site, so you need to use Claremont Gardens up the road for those. Photos aren’t allowed inside, tickets are hard to get, and this is very much a guided-visit property rather than a free-range family day out. One reviewer also had a rather grumpy greeting from staff, though that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
