The long read worth saving for nap time
What’s it actually like?
Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park is a free, mostly outdoor walk in west Faversham, set around the remains of the old gunpowder works. It’s part nature spot, part industrial history lesson, with lakes, waterways, ruins and information boards that actually seem worth reading. For families, the appeal is simple: easy trails, plenty to spot, and enough variety to keep children moving without it feeling like a slog. Reviewers mention ducks, swans, shady paths, benches for picnics and routes that suit buggies and wheelchairs on at least some sections. It also scores well for dog walking and general calm, which is no bad thing when you’re trying to get everyone out the house. The catch is that it’s very much a bring-your-own-everything sort of place. There’s free parking, but no real facilities on site, the visitor centre may be closed, and the disabled toilet needs a special key. Paths can be muddy, mosquitoes show up in summer, and the water and old structures mean you do need to keep an eye on children and dogs.
