Days out near Worthing

Worthing is better than its reputation. It just doesn't shout about it. Worthing has spent years being the place people mention apologetically — 'it's quite nice actually' being the standard endorsement, delivered with mild surprise. The beach is genuinely good: wide, sandy in places, shallow water that works for small kids, a pier that's seen better days but still delivers. On a clear day in early summer before the school holidays, it's as good as anywhere on the south coast. Highdown Gardens is the underrated option — a chalk garden on the hill above the town with views across to the Isle of Wight on a clear day, completely free, and peaceful in a way that most family attractions aren't. Not for very small children who need something to do rather than somewhere to be. Excellent for everyone else. For indoor days, Worthing has better coverage than you'd expect from a town its size. Hollywood Bowl is reliable. Splashpoint Leisure Centre has a pool with decent facilities. The town centre has a handful of soft play and activity options that fill a rainy morning without requiring a two-hour drive. Brighton is 12 miles east and Arundel is 10 miles north — which means Worthing works well as a base for a bigger day rather than a destination in itself. The lido opens in summer and is worth knowing about. The seafront has a miniature railway that children find disproportionately exciting. Small pleasures, honestly delivered.
